Get Fit, Franklin County is a movement; it’s a call to action for all Franklin County residents to get moving!
According to the 2015 Summit Health Community Health Needs Assessment, only 17% of our County’s residents reported having exercised enough to meet National physical activity guidelines. Additionally, one in four Americans sit more than eight hours a day, according to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
You probably already know that getting enough physical activity is important for an overall healthy lifestyle and feeling your best, but did you know that just sitting to much can also impact your overall health? Research has connected prolonged sitting to serious health risks such as increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and death; even for people who do get regular physical activity. So, what can you do? Move more, sit less!
But what’s the best way to get active? The answer: whatever gets you moving! Did you clean your house? Walk the dog? Work in the garden? That all counts as activity and decreases sitting time. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion developed the Move Your Way campaign to share key recommendations from the second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, released in November 2018. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, Move Your Way emphasizes personalized, practical strategies that people can use to fit more activity into their busy lives, while clearly communicating the amount and types of physical activity Americans need to stay healthy.
The month of May is physical activity month and a great time to consider, “How can I incorporate more movement into my day?” National guidelines recommend adults get at least 150 minutes of activity every week. If that seems like an unrealistic goal for you, don’t stress. Any increase in activity, from where you’re starting, is a healthy step towards feeling your best. Also, keep in mind that the kiddos in your life should be getting at least 60 minutes of activity every single day. To increase physical activity, find something you enjoy doing and invite your family and friends to get involved!
